Regular Garage Door Checks
As summer comes back to grace our shores once more, up and down the country people will be heading back out into their gardens to get them back on top form.
As a result, people will be using their garages more frequently to get out lawnmowers and gardening tools, and it is for this reason that during the summer months we here at JB Doors receive more calls from people discovering something amiss with their garage doors.
Checking your garage door
This month, we’ll be discussing the importance of carrying out regular garage door checks, highlighting what things you can be on the lookout for this summer when you’re pottering about in the garden. And if you do spot any problems with your door, be sure to contact JB Doors right away for a quality garage door service.
Observation
Be it automated or manual, you should regularly watch your garage door as it opens and closes to see if it jolts or if the motion remains smooth. Listening out for problems can also work, as you may be able to hear jolts as the garage door comes down that you fail to spot. Scraping sounds could be a sign that your door is meeting resistance which may cause disastrous faults with your garage door further down the line.
Check the Springs
Garage door springs help to maintain the tension that stops the door from free-falling. Springs don’t last forever so it pays to check them regularly to see if they are working as they are supposed to. If they look rusted at all, call your local garage door supplier to have a professional check if your garage door is still safe to use.
An Exterior Check
Washing your garage door could also help you to spot faults. Rinsing it down with a hose and wiping it down is a good way to find areas of concern, like those that have rusted on a metal door or those that have rotted on a wooden door. Problems like these can quickly compromise the garage door, putting your safety and that of your family at risk. Contact your supplier immediately.
Keep the Tracks Clear
Although you need to pay particular heed to this aspect towards the end of summer, you should make a conscious effort to keep the track along which your garage door opens and closes clear of any and all obstructions all year round. Leaves can easily get jammed in the tracks, and if your garage is especially full of stuff you could also inadvertently block the track with anything from a mountain bike on its rack to a parasol. Whatever the obstruction may be, you don’t want to potentially damage your garage door by opening and closing it while something is jammed in the tracks.
Lubrication
Regularly ensuring that the moving parts of your garage door are lubricated is an excellent way to extend its life. Spray the springs, rollers and pivots with a silicone based lubricant and your garage door will run along its track more smoothly. While not a check in itself, it’s important to keep on top of this, and as an extra little job to do as you’re out in your garden it wouldn’t hurt!
