How To Re-Paint Your Garage Door
Painting your garage door can give it a new lease of life and will transform the exterior of the garage so it complements the rest of your home seamlessly. While many put off the task of repainting their garage door, when armed with the correct tools and equipment this can prove to be a simple, and often rather enjoyable, DIY project. So, make the most of this glorious sunshine in the run-up to the summer by following this handy step-by-step guide to revamp the look of your garage door without any mistakes.
Garage Door Preparation
Prior to starting any painting work, it’s extremely important to prepare the surface of your garage door:
-Carefully sand the door to remove any existing peeling paint
-Remove any rust found on your metal garage door and remember to apply a primer to metal parts which are exposed to the elements to prevent future rusting
-Ensure the door is completely clean from grime and dirt by thoroughly washing down the door using a power washer on a low setting if possible. If you cannot access a power washer, you can use a sponge or cloth with a bucket of hot, soapy water instead.
Tools and equipment
When the time comes for you to start painting, it’s important to prepare all your tools and equipment in advance so the task is quick and easy to complete:
-Make sure the paint you have purchased is specially designed for outdoor use and that it is intended for the material of your garage door
-Line up your cans of paint in the order you will need them
-Lay down plastic sheets, cardboard or newspaper to protect surrounding surfaces from any drips and spills
-Stick masking tape around any areas of the garage that you don’t want to be painted
Painting
Once you have carried out all the preparation work so the surfaces are clean and protected, the task of repainting your garage door can commence!
-A primer must be applied to your garage door so the surface will accept the major colour change much better. This is particularly important if you have chosen to repaint the door using a much darker colour
-Remember to allow the paint to dry completely before you apply the next layer to avoid unsightly smudges or marks
-Avoid painting in bad weather as streaks in the paint can ruin your garage door’s new look
